A PIONEERING DEVELOPMENT
Bridge City is a multi-billion rand undertaking, a Presidential lead project and the first development of its kind in South Africa. This polycentric urban metro combines the best of mixed-use offerings including light industrial, commercial, retail and residential opportunities. It is the outcome of a collaboration between Tongaat Hulett and the eThekwini Municipality, namely the Effingham Development Joint Venture. The result is a professionally-managed, dynamic precinct that boasts compelling and flexible opportunities for investors and developers alike.
The development is located just 17 kilometres from the Durban city centre, between the two key nodes of Pinetown and uMhlanga Ridge. For the first time, Bridge City is connecting the communities of Inanda, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu and Phoenix to the broader city, linking a significant work force and commuter node into the urban system. As a result, the precinct will serve as the social and commercial nucleus to an area housing a population of over 800 000 people.
The whole development is overseen by the Bridge City Management Association, a team of Urban Management specialists who ensure the highest levels of security, support and service for the owners, residents and visitors to the area.
The whole development has been concieved of holisitcally so the precinct comes to life as a vibrant, interconnected community. The Bridge City Mall Shopping Centre has been operational since 2009 and serves as the anchor to the Town Centre development. Complementing this, the Bridge City Business Estate further activates the node through light industrial/commercial activities and significant job opportunities. On completion, a regional medical services component offers significant job and development opportunities. This includes the 500-bed Dr Pixely ka Isaka Seme Memorial Regional State Hospital and a 150-bed private institution. This public offering is further enhanced by a new regional Magistrates’ Court and related civic services.
