Bridge City is a multi-billion rand undertaking, a Presidential lead project and the first development of its kind in South Africa. This polycentric urban metro combines the best of mixed-use offerings including light industrial, commercial, retail and residential opportunities. It is the outcome of a collaboration between Tongaat Hulett and the eThekwini Municipality, namely the Effingham Development Joint Venture. The result is a professionally-managed, dynamic precinct that boasts compelling and flexible opportunities for investors and developers alike.

GO!Durban Integration

Key to activating the precinct as a whole is the public transport master plan currently being executed by the eThekwini Municipality. Bridge City is a key node in the R20 billion GO!Durban Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN) and on completion is projected to become the second busiest commuter exchange in Durban. Between now and 2030, the project will feed into four key “corridors” connecting Pinetown, the uMhlanga Ridge, the CBD, Cornubia and others all the way through to the King Shaka International Airport. These routes, along with the required feeder routes, will integrate public transport like trains and busses in one world-class network to make the city of Durban more liveable and sustainable.

The Bridge City Railway station is already located under the Bridge City Mall Shopping Centre, with 22 trains running to and from the Durban CBD daily. This means the area is being activated as a transport node for the city even at this early stage. Phase 1 of the GO!Durban IRPTN is to be completed in 2018, with Bridge City serving as the meeting point for three bus rapid transport (BRT) corridors. Located at the heart of this network, Bridge City will be seamlessly connected to the rest of the city and beyond.

Bridge City Management Association (BCMA)

Bridge City is a joint venture between Tongaat Hulett Developments (THD) and the eThekwini Municipality (eTM), where THD is development manager and sales agent for the project.

The Bridge City Management Association (BCMA) has been set up to manage the public space in Bridge City. Broadly tasked with managing security, landscaping maintenance, general maintenance, design review and administration in Bridge City, the operational activities of the Association are handled by Precinct Manager Nwabiza Mkhize. Employed by Urban MGT (the company contracted to manage the BCMA) Nwabisa works with various support staff, service providers, contractors and the City to ensure the precinct meets optimal management levels.
